What was that one thing that made you think that you wanted to do this?

Mine was when I was about six years old and seeing Superman on the screen I was blown away. My father told me that they can do ANYTHING on TV, so from then on I wanted to be able to do anything.

I used to act, but had thousands of ideas for stories running around in my head, things I wanted to say, that sort of thing, that I felt I didn't have the power to bring forward seeing that an actor puts forward the ideas of the director.

So, I did it for that reason, and the fact that it was easier to create my work if I was MAKING my stuff, as opposed to waiting for someone to come to me.

Also, filmmaking is the second most popular artform after music, and I've always had an interest in art, but couldn't draw, paint, sing or play an instrument.

I actually got into filmmaking after seeing a very bad movie. :O I went to see The Flintstones Movie when I was 8. I hated it. I thought I could do better than that. That first started the wheels in my head turning. Then I thought I saw Steven Spielberg's name in the credits. I thought, "I could do it better than Spielberg!!!!" I was very impressed with myself, and that's when I knew I wanted toget into filmmaking.

I got into making films for the money (only kidding).

Actually there are a great number of reasons to why I wish to make films. It was when I 12 years old that I found a love for film. At school my english teacher Mr. Stonehouse taught me to look at any movie from a different way. That was the first step and lots of things of happened since then that make me want to continue pursuing the art.

Living in East L.A. and being poor all of my life I lost a lot of self-esteme and thought "shit, I'm Mexican/American from East L.A. theirs no way I'll ever be a film-maker". I'm twenty-four now and all my life people have told me that if I was to try just a little I would be famous. I finally belive those people. My creativity "CAN NOT" be matched, plus the life I've live in L.A has given me endless experinces which come out in my writing. For exsample: I you write about robbing a bank and I write about robbing a bank who's is going to be more detailed and emotional. Well, I almost robbed a bank about a year 1/2 ago. Romance, car chases, gun shoot outs, killings, vampire night life, drama I live through all this. I've lived it seen it first hand, I know how it smells and tastes. After seeing El Mariachi by my Aztec brother I know I can do the exsact same thing. Remeber my name in a couple of years you guys will defenatly see one of my movies in the big screen. Good luck to all of you and if you want to write better stories my advice is go out and be dangerous for a while. ALEJANDRO MADRIGAL "tapatio"

I have always loved films, but wanted to act on stage. Then, age 16, I grew disillusioned with the theatre and immersed myself more and more in films (especially John Woo and Jackie Chan films).

I was doing a Performing Arts college course at this time and, for one assignment we had to direct some scenes on stage, anything we wanted, so I chose a couple of scenes from A Better Tomorrow (the bar scenes). All my actors said "John Woo's all about the gunfights, you gotta do a gunfight". We decided it was a little impractical to do a gunfight on stage, so we borrowed a video camera, took over the college bar for two days and shot one in there.

I edited it together and it was shown on a video screen in between the two scenes to link them together. I was the only person to do anything like this and everybody loved it.

Making that first little short piece was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my whole life and it was then I decided that making films was what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.

Why be stuck in a shitty desk job, hating every minute you're there, when you can make films? I want to be able to get up in the morning and instead of my first thought being "oh fuck, I've gotta go to work", it'll be "yes! We're shooting the fight scene today!" or whatever.

I want to give people the same kind of feelings I get from watching a realy good movie. (If someone posts a smutty comment in reply to that, I'll bloody kill 'em.)

I guess I just want to enjoy my work, get paid for doing something I love and entertain the general public.

Wow! That came out a lot heavier than I intended:-)

    Well... here it goes:

When I was six, my mother became very ill and was in bed for almost a year.

Everyday, I would run home from school and sit by her side for hours just talking and laughing with her.

Then one day I came home, except for this time she was almost to ill to even say "hi." That's when she said the most important words I would ever hear in my lifetime, "Michael... I love you dearly, and I beg of you to become a filmmaker. I want you to inspire both the young and old to do things in their life that would not normally do. I want you to make people smile, and laugh and be sad and cry. Please do this for me son."

Moments later she passed on. So you see, that is why I want to be a filmmaker. It was my mothers final wish. A final wish she gave to me

I have missed her dearly over the years, but I will always have filmmaking to turn to when I am lonely.

PLUS I WANT TO BE FILTHY RICH!
